Carnations are unfairly thought of as plain; well-chosen bicolour or pastel carnations last up to two weeks in a vase. The stem has nodes: cut at an angle a little above a node rather than right on it so water can rise freely. Carnations are sensitive to ethylene — they fade faster next to a fruit bowl.
